Putting a twist on the cue ball

A friend of mine is using a technique he picked up from an ol' timer at a local bar.

when striking the cue ball he twists his grip hand to spin or twist the CB in a clock wise or counter clock wise motion. The result is not unlike English where it transfers to the OB aiding in the shot. The Twist is done right as the cue tip is making contact with the CB.

Have you heard of this? if so can you elaborate.

    Thanks, Trotski
